Patient Visual Monitor Technicians

University of Michigan Health-West (Formally Metro Health) is looking for several Patient Visual Monitor Technicians for full and part time, on various shifts and various locations.

The Patient Visual Monitor Technician assists the nursing staff by providing continual observation of the patient to maintain patient safety. Ensures safety of the patient, patient environment, and interacts appropriately with patients. Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Patient Visual Monitor Technician assists nursing staff in providing basic nursing care to patients and assisting with activities of daily living. They will also utilize virtual monitoring to ensure patient safety.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of behavioral health education/training within 90 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (Healthcare Provider) within 6 months of hire
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Must demonstrate ability to operate, maintain, and make minor repairs/adjustments to equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients using push-to-call devices, and/or microphone and headset.
  • Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes.
  • Ability to use discretion and courtesy when collaborating with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Efficiency in multitasking
  • Ability to prioritize simultaneous situations.
  • Ability to continuously monitor up to sixteen patients on a screen while always remaining alert while on duty

Essential Duties:

  • Equipment & Technology:
    • Ensure all equipment is clean, functional, and properly maintained.
    • Coordinate with Health Information and Technology and Clinical Engineering regarding equipment concerns.
    • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workstation; stock supplies and troubleshoot equipment as needed.
  • Patient Safety:
    • Continuously observe patients and report behavior changes, problems or difficulties to nursing staff in a timely and effective manner.
    • Monitors patient environment always to ensure safety.
    • Attempt to redirect, notify nursing, or push stat alarm for any patient on fall precautions attempting to independently get out of bed, wheelchair, or chair.
    • Intervenes should a patient be in an at-risk situation for a fall.
  • Virtual Patient Monitoring & Safety:
    • Demonstrate proficiency in Virtual monitoring software and related tools.
    • Verbally redirect patients via 2-way audio; promptly notify bedside care team if assistance is needed.
    • Observe and communicate changes in patient behavior or condition that may pose safety risks.
    • Participate in patient handoffs, providing key behavioral and clinical updates.
  • Direct Patient Care:
    • Assists with activities and provide patient comfort
      • Changing linens, assists with transport and ambulation, repositioning of patients
    • Assists with activities of daily living including but not limited to
      • Hygiene
      • Nutrition
      • Elimination
    • Documentation & Communication:
      • Document care given, mental health precautions flow sheet, behavioral changes, and other as directed by RN.
      • Communicate effectively with RNs and interdisciplinary team members using phone, computer, Vocera, and other systems.
    • Collaboration & Professionalism:
      • Deliver patient explanations as needed without offering opinions or counsel.
      • Participate in department meetings, in-services, and committees as requested.
      • Support flexible staffing and assist with additional tasks to promote team efficiency.
    • Training & Competency:
      • Successfully complete unit-specific competencies during orientation.
      • Maintain knowledge of department protocols, safety practices, and emergency procedures.
    • Miscellaneous:
      • Talk with patient, read to patient, reorient patient to time, place, and self
      • Perform other tasks appropriate to scope of practice as delegated by the RN
      • Actively participate in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient work environment
