NASA Glenn Pathways Internship Opportunities

Applications Open September 21–25, 2026

Interested in building technology that supports NASA missions while completing your degree?

NASA Glenn Research Center is recruiting students for upcoming Pathways Internship Program opportunities. Pathways is a multi-semester internship program that allows students to complete semester-long work rotations with NASA while continuing their education.

Students gain hands-on experience working alongside NASA engineers, scientists, technical experts, and program professionals on real projects supporting the Agency’s missions. Pathways can also provide a potential route to a full-time civil service career after graduation, although conversion is not guaranteed.

Majors We Are Seeking

We are especially interested in students studying:

  • Ceramic Engineering
  • Ceramic Processing
  • Polymer Science and Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering

Featured Opportunities at NASA Glenn

Electrical Engineering – Power Conversion & Controls

Thermal Energy Conversion Branch

Help develop the technologies that turn thermal energy into electrical power for future space missions.

Students in this area may support NASA’s development of thermal-to-electric power conversion systems for radioisotope and fission space-nuclear missions, including Closed Brayton Cycle and Stirling-cycle technologies.

Depending on experience and academic level, work may include:

  • Designing, modeling, and prototyping power-electronics hardware
  • Developing motor drives and DC-DC power converters
  • Supporting electrical architecture and control-system development
  • Conducting engineering analyses, trade studies, and laboratory testing
  • Evaluating technologies for radiation, electromagnetic interference, thermal, and reliability requirements
  • Supporting technology development for lunar, planetary, science, and deep-space missions
  • Contributing to technical publications and research

This opportunity is especially well suited for students interested in power electronics, electrical systems, controls, energy conversion, and space technology.

Battery & Energy Storage Materials

Ceramics and Energy Storage Materials Branch

Help NASA develop the next generation of energy-storage technology.

Students in this area will support research focused on advanced battery chemistries and solid-state batteries capable of operating longer, more safely, and across the extreme temperature environments required for future NASA missions.

Work may include:

  • Synthesizing novel energy-storage materials
  • Fabricating and processing battery materials and components
  • Building hands-on laboratory and characterization skills
  • Testing electrochemical devices and battery systems
  • Studying how material properties affect battery performance
  • Supporting research into batteries capable of operating in extreme environments

This opportunity is particularly suited for M.S. and Ph.D. students with interests or experience in materials, ceramics, chemical engineering, electrochemical devices, laboratory characterization, battery processing, or battery testing.

Additional NASA Glenn Opportunities

Pathways opportunities will also be available within NASA Glenn's:

Engineering Management Branch
Gain experience supporting the coordination, planning, and management of engineering organizations, projects, and technical activities.

Logistics & Property Management Office
Gain experience supporting the logistics, property, and operational functions required to keep a major NASA research center and its missions running effectively.

Why NASA Pathways?

A Pathways internship is more than a single summer experience. Students can complete multiple rotations with NASA while continuing their education, allowing them to build technical knowledge, professional experience, and relationships across the Agency.

NASA careers can take many different directions. Employees may pursue technical expertise, research, project leadership, engineering management, program management, or other mission-supporting careers throughout their federal service.

Applications are only open September 21–25, 2026.
