Today we are hiring an Area Recycling Operations Director IN Ontario, Canada in Brampton or Kitchener areas.
Position Type: Full-Time | Director Level
Base Salary: C$170,000 – C$215,000, flexible based on qualifications and experience

Job Overview
This Company is seeking an experienced Area Recycling Operations Director to lead the productivity, financial performance, operational excellence, and overall performance of multiple recycling operating units across Canada.
Based in Ontario, this leadership position will oversee five Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) across Canada and play a key role in driving safety, profitability, productivity, employee development, and continuous improvement.
The ideal candidate will have an engineering or related operational background, experience managing multiple facilities or operating sites, and a strong ability to engage directly with people and the business. This is a highly visible leadership position for someone who enjoys taking ownership, developing teams, identifying opportunities for improvement, and making decisions that positively impact business performance.
French and English bilingual capability is considered an asset.


Key Leadership Responsibilities
Multi-Site Operations Management
• Oversee the productivity, financial performance, and overall operations of multiple recycling facilities.
• Provide leadership and direction to operating unit managers and site leadership teams.
• Ensure operating units meet or exceed established annual performance objectives.
• Monitor operating performance and establish appropriate performance measures and accountability standards.
• Visit operating sites regularly to evaluate performance, operating conditions, safety, and business needs.
• Build strong relationships with site teams and remain actively engaged in day-to-day operational challenges and opportunities.
• Ensure each facility has the personnel, equipment, materials, and resources necessary to operate safely, efficiently, and effectively.
Strategic Planning & Business Execution
• Assist in developing and implementing area recycling operating plans aligned with long-term organizational objectives.
• Help establish responsibilities, authority, priorities, and performance expectations for operating units.
• Counsel managers on the execution of programs, processes, and organizational initiatives.
• Provide direction when modifications to work plans or contingency plans are required.
• Support strategic growth initiatives and operational innovation throughout the Canadian recycling business.
• Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, profitability, service, and long-term business performance.
Financial & Budget Management
• Assist in developing annual operating-unit budgets and forecasts.
• Forecast future financial and human-resource requirements.
• Support managers in optimizing budgets and maintaining budget compliance.
• Facilitate regularly scheduled Profit & Loss (P&L) reviews.
• Develop and execute action plans designed to continuously improve:
o Equipment and facility utilization
o Equipment maintenance
o Labor costs
o Material costs
o Overall profitability
• Conduct regular Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) reviews.
• Monitor changing COGS and develop strategies to maintain or improve gross-margin performance.
• Analyze operating results and help identify corrective actions and opportunities for improvement.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
• Develop and maintain programs designed to improve safety, productivity, and profitability.
• Ensure operations comply with applicable OSHA, DOT, federal, provincial, and local requirements, as applicable to the Canadian operating environment.
• Conduct regular safety reviews with plant managers and supervisors.
• Promote a culture built around safety, accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
• Identify operational risks and work with site leadership to implement appropriate corrective measures.
People Leadership & Development
• Oversee the human-resource needs of the recycling operations.
• Participate in employee selection, coaching, training, and performance evaluation.
• Provide input regarding employee compensation, promotions, and terminations.
• Develop high-performing teams and promote a culture of collaboration and accountability.
• Coach and mentor managers and employees to strengthen leadership capabilities.
• Help develop the next generation of operational leaders.
• Build strong relationships with employees throughout the organization.
• Encourage employee engagement and professional development.
Commodity Sales & Market Development
• Partner with the commodity sales team to ensure recycled materials meet applicable mill standards.
• Collaborate with sales teams to effectively market materials and support opportunities to achieve the strongest possible pricing.
• Partner with SMB, PSS, and third-party sales teams on:
o Requests for Proposals (RFPs)
o Bids
o Growth opportunities
o New business initiatives
• Support the identification and evaluation of opportunities that can contribute to business growth.
Capital Planning & Engineering
• Facilitate and coordinate capital planning for the area recycling business.
• Evaluate facility, equipment, and operational capital requirements.
• Partner with engineering teams when specialized technical support is required.
• Support projects designed to improve facility utilization, operational efficiency, safety, and long-term performance.
Industry & Regulatory Engagement
• Participate in relevant recycling and industry associations.
• Monitor regulatory and legislative developments that may affect the recycling business.
• Stay informed about industry trends, operational changes, and market conditions that could impact Canadian recycling operations.
• Communicate relevant developments to leadership and operating teams.


Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Industrial Engineering or a related field, OR
• High School Diploma/GED from an accredited institution plus 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of a degree.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Demonstrated management and leadership experience.
• Experience overseeing operations, facilities, plants, or multiple operating locations.
• Strong financial, operational, and people-management capabilities.
• Ability to analyze operational and financial performance and implement appropriate action plans.
• Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.


Preferred Qualifications
• 10+ years of relevant professional experience in addition to meeting the education requirements.
• Engineering background with experience managing multiple operating sites.
• Experience in recycling, manufacturing, industrial operations, waste management, materials recovery, or a related industry.
• Experience managing multiple facilities or geographically dispersed teams.
• Bilingual French and English is an asset.
• Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout Canada.


Travel Requirements
This position requires significant travel between the company’s Canadian operating locations.
The successful candidate should be prepared to travel approximately 50–70% of the time across Canada, including regular visits to the five MRFs under their area of responsibility.
Travel will be an important part of the role and will involve onsite engagement with plant managers, supervisors, employees, and other business partners.
