CertainTeed Roofing R&D Co-Op
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must be able to work onsite in Northborough, MA for the full 6-month co-op assignment and be actively pursuing a related BS, MS, or PhD degree throughout the co-op period.
We are seeking candidates available to start in early 2027 and continue through mid-2027, covering the spring/summer semesters.

Job Summary
The CertainTeed Roofing R&D team leads technological development to make climate resilient roofing products and support our company's vision of being a recognized leader in sustainable habitat to make the world a better home.
Join a team dedicated to Polymer Modified Roofing Products and provide critical material formulation and testing support for multiple projects, including key business strategic initiatives. You will prepare polymer-modified asphalt formulations in the lab, use rheological and mechanical characterization tools to analyze samples and improve on formulations by understanding structure-property relationships in polymer materials. This work is multidisciplinary and spans polymer chemistry, material science, chemical engineering, and applied physics.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to development of climate resilient construction products, specifically roofing shingles and underlayment, by preparing and characterizing polymeric materials made in the lab and plants.
- Use polymer and materials science knowledge of structure-property relationships to enhance formulations and product design.
- Maintain an open and innovative mindset to help improve systems and create novel approaches for customer needs.
- Document and present findings in oral and written form.

Job Requirements:
Must be actively enrolled as a student in a BS, MS or PhD program in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or other related disciplines.
- Independent laboratory research experience (through academic research, internship or previous co-op) required.
- Methodically execute sample testing and analysis with good attention to detail
- Capable of working independently as well as with a diverse R&D project team
- Able to make preliminary assessments/quality/meaning of data
- Microsoft Office Suite proficiency
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Demonstrate a commitment to safety in all work activities.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
- Preferred laboratory experience in synthesis and some of the following:
- Rheology, mechanical testing, chemical testing, high temperature experimentation.
