Transportation Engineering Spring Co-op

The Transportation Engineering Intern (“Intern”) will participate in the planning, design, and implementation of innovative intersections as well as systemic and reactive corridor safety improvement countermeasures.  This role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience under the guidance of experienced Professional Engineers (“PEs”) while participating in field reconnaissance activities and minor surveying tasks.  While learning about project lifecycle management, the Intern will gain hands-on experience while developing technical skills through exposure to roadway projects using industry-standard tools and methodologies. 

Position Specific Responsibilities                                                                   

• Assist in preparing engineering drawings, specifications, and reports using tools like Open Roads Design, Civil 3D or similar software
• Conduct data collection and analysis for project planning, including site surveys and field reconnaissance activities
• Support project managers in coordinating project tasks, schedules, and documentation
• Participate in site visits to monitor construction progress and ensure compliance with design specifications
• Perform calculations and simulations for structural, hydraulic, or transportation systems
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, environmental scientists, and contractors
• Contribute to the preparation of presentations and proposals for clients or stakeholders

Career Path

The Transportation Engineering Intern role provides a path toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with exposure to a range of projects focusing on the unique needs of Palmer Engineering clients.  Participation in the day to day engineering operations and project meetings will provide exposure to the stages of roadway projects while benefiting from training in advanced tools to enhance project delivery. Interaction with project managers and stakeholders creates an excellent opportunity for the Intern to develop effective communication strategies while visiting sites to see the engineering process in action. 

Education and Experience

• Current enrollment in an accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Civil Engineering or a related field
• Completed coursework in areas such as structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, or hydraulics
• Proficiency in or willingness to learn engineering software (e.g., Open Roads Design, Civil 3D)
• Analytical and problem-solving ability as well as effective communication skills required
• Ability to work independently and also as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
• Prior internship or co-op experience in civil engineering is desirable
