Position Summary

Seeking a detail-oriented and innovative Packaging Engineer to support our food-grade logistics and distribution operations. This role is responsible for designing, testing, and improving packaging solutions that ensure product integrity, food safety compliance, transportation efficiency, and cost optimization across our warehousing and distribution network.

The ideal candidate will have experience or schooling in packaging engineering within food manufacturing, cold chain logistics, or food-grade distribution environments and possess a strong understanding of packaging materials, regulatory compliance, and supply chain optimization.

Key Responsibilities

Packaging Design & Development

  • Design and develop primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging solutions for food-grade products.
  • Evaluate packaging materials for durability, sustainability, food safety, and transportation performance.
  • Create packaging specifications, testing protocols, and standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with customers and internal operations teams to develop customized packaging solutions.

Logistics & Supply Chain Optimization

  • Improve packaging efficiency to reduce transportation costs, damage, and waste.
  • Analyze pallet configurations, cube utilization, and load optimization for truckload and LTL shipments.
  • Support cold chain and temperature-sensitive packaging initiatives when applicable.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and packaging process improvements within warehouse operations.

Testing & Quality Assurance

  • Conduct packaging performance testing including compression, vibration, drop, and environmental testing.
  • Ensure packaging complies with FDA, USDA, GMP, SQF, HACCP, and customer-specific food safety requirements.
  • Investigate packaging failures, transportation damage, and customer complaints to determine root causes and corrective actions.
  • Maintain packaging documentation, specifications, and quality records.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with operations, quality assurance, procurement, transportation, and customer teams to implement packaging improvements.
  • Work with suppliers and vendors to source cost-effective and compliant packaging materials.
  • Support continuous improvement and lean initiatives across distribution and warehouse operations.
  • Provide technical guidance and training related to packaging best practices.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering
  • 0+ years of packaging engineering experience in food manufacturing, food distribution, consumer packaged goods (CPG), or logistics environments.
  • Knowledge of food-grade packaging regulations and standards.
  • Experience with packaging materials including corrugated, plastics, films, insulated packaging, and pallets.
  • Strong understanding of ISTA testing standards and transportation packaging requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and packaging design or CAD software.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
