Postdoctoral Researcher- 2D materials quantum devices

The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is the premier research laboratory for the Navy. The Materials Science and Technology Division is at the forefront of advancing quantum technologies, focusing on cutting-edge research into two-dimensional (2D) materials and their integration into novel sensing, imaging, photonics, and quantum applications. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to lead transformative research in the synthesis, processing, and characterization of advanced materials and contribute to developing reconfigurable optoelectronic and quantum devices.

The Materials Science and Technology Division seeks a Post-Doc to join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team researching the formulation, processing, and characterization of 2D materials, including their growth and integration into quantum and optoelectronic devices. The candidate will focus on materials synthesis, their characterization, and integration into optoelectronic and quantum devices. The project will involve; developing advanced methods for analyzing material surfaces, morphology, and structure using various characterization techniques, employing nanofabrication techniques, such as electron beam lithography, to create single photon emitters and integrate 2D materials into hybrid structures, performing electrical and optoelectronic device characterization, including quantum efficiency, output/transfer characteristics, and low-temperature measurements, developing protocols for materials growth and surface modification to improve functionality and more.

Interested applicants should have:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • Proven expertise in materials synthesis, processing, and characterization.
  • Experience with surface analysis techniques (e.g., AFM, PFM, PL, XPS) and various characterization methods (e.g., TEM, SEM, FTIR, XRD).
  • Strong background in nanofabrication techniques, especially electron beam lithography.
  • Familiarity with low-temperature measurements and quantum behavior of materials.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency required.
