Quality Engineer II

REPORTS TO:  Production Quality Manager

Austal USA Advanced Technologies (AT) is a division of Austal USA, a global defense prime contractor and a designer and manufacturer of defense and commercial ships.

 

Austal USA AT works at the forefront to invent, mature, and implement advanced maritime technologies which enhance operational capacities and improve readiness of our defense systems. Austal USA AT operates a technology hub in Charlottesville VA which works to bring cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to scale and also oversees operation of the U.S. Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM COE) located in Danville, VA. The mission of the AM COE is to operationalize additive manufacturing in the submarine industrial base and provide emergent request support to sustain our Nation’s fleet.

 

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Executing job duties in compliance with Austal USA AAT’s Quality Management System.
  • Collaborating with leadership to monitor and document quality activities and production floor processes, and to achieve continuous improvement through habitual feedback.
  • Liaising with the Austal USA team to ensure current laws, rules, and regulations that govern manufacturing and industry best practices are applied.
  • As needed, performing audits of procedures and processes, in addition to internal / external audits performed within partner teams, to assess risks and detect and prevent instances of non-compliance.
  • Supporting and/or leading root cause analysis of complex manufacturing processes across multiple organizations.
  • Assessing customer drawings and specs for inspect-ability and machinability.
  • Providing guidance to sub-tiers and partners during the manufacturing process review.
  • Providing and/or recording all OQE/Artifacts related to the program.
  • Developing and enforcing a training plan across partner teams for topics relevant to operation.
  • Supporting investigations of suspected and potential violations of quality-related policies and procedures and documenting resulting corrective actions.
  • Collaborating with partners & subcontractors to ensure documented quality standards are met.
  • Acting as a Compliance Champion and working to promote a culture of compliance throughout the operation.
  • Other duties may be assigned, as needed, other than those specified in this description.

 

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
  • 2 – 4 years proven experience in a field/department/position involving quality and compliance expectations/requirements.
  • Experience with the AS9100 or ISO 9001 standard; performing external and/or internal audits requested.
  • Experience with Department of Defense quality flow-downs strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications’ knowledge/prior training preferred.
  • CMM and/or hands-on machining experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to interpret complex external (e.g., legal) and internal governance (e.g., corporate policies) documents and to exercise independent and objective decisions towards functional groups and company departments to effectuate related quality compliance.
  • Highly evolved oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with limited direction in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Exemplify strong knowledge of external (e.g., legal) and internal governance (e.g., corporate policies), industry protocols, and best practices.
  • Possess a collaborative personality and be open to suggestions from team members while maintaining independence and objectivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and to work collaboratively with other functional groups.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Must have, or be willing to obtain, job-relevant professional certifications.
  • Proficient in the use of standard office computer software including Microsoft Windows and MS Office.
  • Experience with ERP, PLM and/or MES software(s) a plus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

Work time will be spent in a standard office environment with manufacturing plant exposure.

 

TOOLS: 

MS Office, Manufacturing Execution System (MES) software, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.

 

DIRECTION EXERCISED: 

Works under general supervision. Exercises judgment in analyzing data, identifying issues, and recommending solutions within established guidelines.

 

LIASES WITH

All other departments within the company, subcontractors, regulatory agencies, and suppliers.

 

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status.
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date.
