Job Summary
The CertainTeed Roofing R&D team leads technological development to make climate resilient roofing products and support our company's vision of being a recognized leader in sustainable habitat to make the world a better home.
You will join a team dedicated to Polymer Modified Roofing Products and provide critical material formulation and testing support for multiple projects, including key business strategic initiatives. You will prepare polymer-modified asphalt formulations in the lab, use rheological and mechanical characterization tools to analyze samples and improve on formulations by understanding structure-property relationships in polymer materials. This work is multidisciplinary and spans polymer chemistry, material science, chemical engineering, and applied physics.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to development of climate resilient construction products by preparing and characterizing polymeric materials.
- Use polymer and materials science knowledge of structure-property relationships to enhance product performance.
- Work safely at all times
- Document findings and present them in oral or written form.
Required Qualifications:
Currently enrolled as a student in a Bachelors, master’s or PhD program in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or other related disciplines.
Competencies:
- Methodically execute sample testing and analysis with good attention to detail
- Work effectively with a diverse R&D team actively supporting a culture of safety
- Capable of working independently as well as with a project team
- Able to make preliminary assessments/quality/meaning of data
- Able to deliver short PowerPoint presentations summarizing findings
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Open and curious mindset
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
- Experience with laboratory and/or manufacturing facilities
- Previous research/intern experience in a lab setting

The hourly rate for internship positions ranges from $21 to $29.50 per hour. However, the actual rate provided is determined by the students’ classification in their undergraduate (freshmen, sophomore, junior, senior) or graduate (first year, second year, etc.) programs.
