Network Engineer Intern

Position Overview

Merit SI Technologies is seeking a Network Engineer Intern to support our engineering team in designing, implementing, and maintaining network infrastructure for renewable energy projects. This role provides hands-on experience with industrial networking, cybersecurity, and cloud connectivity supporting solar PV, energy storage, and wind energy systems.

The intern will work closely with experienced network engineers and architects to assist with networking tasks across multiple renewable energy sites while contributing to Merit’s SCADA, Controls, Network, and Data Analytics platform. 

This internship offers exposure to industrial networking technologies, cloud environments, and large-scale infrastructure projects in the renewable energy industry.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with network implementation for renewable energy project sites.
• Support network architecture documentation including network diagrams and IP addressing schemes.
• Help configure and test networking equipment including switches, routers, and firewalls.
• Assist with troubleshooting network connectivity issues and gathering diagnostic information.
• Support the setup of VPN and remote connectivity between cloud environments and field sites.
• Assist with fiber optic network planning and documentation.
• Participate in maintaining network security and segmentation strategies.
• Help maintain documentation and configuration records for deployed networks.
• Support monitoring of network services and recurring network-related costs.
• Assist engineers during project deployment, commissioning, and testing phases.

Preferred Skills & Technical Exposure

Experience is not required, but exposure to the following is beneficial:

• Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, switching)
• VLANs and network segmentation
• Basic firewall and VPN concepts
• Cisco networking equipment
• Windows Server environments
• DNS and DHCP
• Basic cybersecurity principles
• Cloud environments such as Azure or AWS
• Understanding of industrial or operational technology (OT) networking is a plus

The internship provides exposure to technologies used within Merit’s industrial networking environments including Cisco infrastructure and cloud-connected site networking. 

Education Requirements

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field
• Coursework or lab experience in computer networking or cybersecurity preferred
