Metallurgical Engineering Co-Op

SSAB’s Co-op/Intern program gives students the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience in a hands-on work environment. SSAB co-ops work with various functional areas within the company to make valuable contributions to projects, improve steel-making practices, and develop new products in state-of-the-art facilities. Co-ops develop strong organizational, operational, technical, and critical thinking skills through a variety of meaningful assignments.

Openings - 3 positions each term:

  • Fall 2026 
  • Spring 2027
  • Summer 2027
  • Fall 2027

  • 3 alternating semesters or back-to-back + 1
  • 2 alternating semesters or back-to-back

Metallurgical Engineering Co-Op/Intern

This position is responsible for providing technical assistance and problem solving for Operations while gaining valuable real-world experience.

What you will do

  • Assist with the development of operating practices to produce quality steel products meeting or exceeding industry standards and customer requirements
  • Work under a metallurgist in melting, rolling & finishing, or heat treating
  • Conduct short-term projects under Technical Services guidance
  • Data collection, graphing, statistical analysis
  • Performance summaries
  • Practice safe work habits (safety training provided)
  • Create a report that summarizes accomplishments made during the term

Required Qualifications

  • Working on a B.S. degree in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering
  • GPA 3.0 minimum
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to navigate multiple databases
  • Strong analytical capability and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior Co-op work experience in a manufacturing environment (preferably with a metallurgical focus)
