Sales and Management Intern

May - August 2019 • West Chester Township, OH

What I liked

I liked the way that I was trained and that I always had a manager, assistant manager or full-timer there with me while I was working. Everyone was very willing to help me out with customer questions I was entirely sure how to answer or with product suggestions. I also enjoyed learning about the managerial side of the business operations.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been more down time for me to take all the product knowledge tests. I also think that taking the tests earlier in the internship would have been more beneficial. I had rode along with two sales representatives which I also enjoyed very much and would've enjoyed the opportunity to do a few more ride-alongs.

Advice

Be prepared to be on your feet for 8 hours a day and to work hard. The first couple of weeks you need to be prepared to pick-up on product knowledge quickly. It is a very retail heavy position and you will be dealing with all kinds of customers.

management intern

May - August 2018 • Chatsworth, CA

What I liked

I liked how I was able to learn about management in particular to running a store. I learned about human resources, inventory control, product knowledge, good customer service skills, financial assessments, and much more. It really helped me apply what I have learned over the years through my education in a more practical real life scenario.

What I wish was different

I think everything was fine and honestly didn't feel like anything else had to be different.

Advice

I would share that its always great to ask consistent questions about the industry you are interning in and also network and develop a mutual friendship with your superiors so you can learn more. You will get the most out of the internship depending on how much you put in.

Marketing Intern

June - August 2018 • Pewaukee, WI

What I liked

Great group of people. Was able to fill orders and it felt good knowing I was helping.

What I wish was different

It was about as good as a retail internship can get, I had no complaints.

Advice

Went to Chicago to present an intern project that we worked on in groups all summer to a board of Sherwin executives and other interns. Stayed in a hotel that included a night of bowling, laser tag, and other games. The company payed for food and drinks.

Intern

June - August 2017 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

The internship was very structured with first sending me to a training store and then having a book put together for me to follow along with some normal duties of a worker there

What I wish was different

Nothing, it was very enlightening and I learned a lot about management at a retail level

Advice

Take different kinds of internships. I’ve had two that we’re not that similar and I’ve learned a wide varity of skills and understand more realms of the business world

R&D Engineering Co-op

January - December 2017 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I like that I was given a variety of different projects to work on. I never was lacking for things to do. I typically worked on at least five projects at a time. I enjoyed being busy!

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more training when I first started. I often had to learn as I went on things that full time employees are trained on.

Advice

Never hesitate to ask questions. You aren’t going to know all the answers and you aren’t expected to. You learn the most when you ask questions.

Research and Development Chemist

May 2019 • Bowling Green, KY

What I liked

Overall it is a very relaxed environment. I didn't have to miss out on any trips. For chemistry students this is a pretty good job.

What I wish was different

I'm an engineering student with a chem minor. Compared to engineering the pay is a little low. I wish my boss had more group meeting like the other bosses do.

Advice

Try to learn as much as you can. Ask questions if you are not sure about something. Also if you use a spreadsheet make sure it is the updated one online.

Visual Design Professional Apprentice

April 2017 - August 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed that Sherwin-Williams took the time to involve me in large-scale projects with great impact on the company and provided me with identical responsibilities to those of a junior full-time employee. This demonstrated the level of respect they have for their interns and their belief in the importance professional growth has on an individual. Additionally, my team provided me with a plethora of creative secondary tasks which kept me on my feet and allowed me to understand various aspects of Visual Design and UX outside of my immediate job description.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish would have been different is to have better access to parking, but that's an issue you'll find at any Downtown Cleveland location, unfortunately.

Advice

Make sure to understand how much work you are capable of doing at any given time frame, because juggling tasks and meeting deadlines will happen frequently in this position, and your approach to juggling those tasks will need to be communicated to your coworkers and superiors.
