NFW

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Peoria, IL

What I liked

I liked the small company atmosphere of NFW. It is a positive environment and everyone in general is very friendly and works together to get things done. As an engineering intern, I enjoyed the opportunity to work hands-on in the shop using a variety of tools from screwdrivers to CNC machines. I got to work on my projects from the initial concept and design phase all the way through implementation. There is a lot of growth in the company and optimism for the future.

What I wish was different

I prefer more structure in an internship than what I received. I had to ask for projects or find my own most of the time. That said, NFW is already implementing steps for better structure.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for projects, or take the initiative to start your own project. If you see something needs to be done, then do it! As long as it is a beneficial use of time. Ask co-workers for advice. I found that my co-workers were knowledgeable about engineering, time management, manufacturing, and even life skills! It was great to get to know them and benefit from their experience.

What I liked

My experience with NFW has been fantastic so far. In particular, I really enjoy the level of independence I am given, but I also like the accountability expected out of me. Another thing I really enjoyed was the exposure I was given to multiple areas of the HR field. The people who work here are also amazing, and are always willing to help when needed! Overall, I definitely enjoy being at NFW and would highly recommend it to anyone!
